As a teacher there's a lot that you can do to help support and encourage pupils, parents and even your own school to get more children cycling and walking to school. The following provides a simple summary to help get you started.
For more information on each of these simply register as a Champion and we'll send you a more detailed Action Plan.
Take a look at our case studies too - they're full of inspiration on how other teachers have taken steps to get their pupils healthier and more alert simply by encouraging and enabling them to cycle and walk to school.
Top Tips for Teachers
- Bring school travel into the classroom and use it as a way to deliver the curriculum
- Find out how many children in your school would like to walk or cycle by organising a survey - it's crucial information!
- Identify if there are any practical issues that need to be addressed, such as lack of storage, difficult junctions and fast traffic. A School Travel Plan will enable you to address these.
- Check whether a School Travel Plan has been submitted - this can help with gaining access to any available government funding for a range of items, such as cycle parking and traffic calming. If not, offer to 'lead' a team to develop one. If you do have a School Travel Plan, review it and implement recommendations
- Identify people who can help - other teachers, parents or pupils can all be enlisted and encouraged to help champion the cause and manage any initiatives
- Get parents together to explain the benefits and generate interest
- Organise walking buses or cycle groups
- Arrange a 'car-free' day where pupils are encouraged to walk or cycle to school and set up rewards and incentive schemes for those who do
- Share information with other staff, parents and pupils through newsletters, notice boards and staff meetings
- Organise cycle training and bike maintenance days
