Whatever you decide to do to boost cycling and walking in your School, please get permission from your parents first and let a teacher know.

As a pupil you're the one who stands to directly benefit from cycling or walking to school. Rather than being taken to school in the car you can benefit from the freedom of travelling under your own steam. Join up with friends to cycle or walk together and enjoy not just the freedom, but the health benefits this will bring - you'll feel fitter, look better and feel better too! If the idea of cycling or walking to school appeals, but you think you need some help, then register as one of our Champions and we'll send you a more detailed Action Plan plus a Champions Certificate for your wall.

Top tips to get you started

  1. Find out how many of the kids in your school would like to walk or cycle by organising a survey. Discuss the results with a teacher and get them to become a Champion too!
  2. Think about how you could spread the word around your school - make posters and leaflets or organise a special meeting
  3. Start walking or cycling to school with a group of friends who live near to you
  4. Arrange a 'car-free' day at your school where everyone is asked to walk or cycle to school
  5. Create your own simple 'maps' showing walking and cycling routes to school
  6. Contact your local authority road safety team about slowing down the traffic or get pedestrian crossings introduced around your school
  7. Ask your teachers to help you organise cycle training and bike maintenance days
  8. If your school doesn't have a bike shed, ask a teacher why not! There may be the government funding available to build one
  9. Check whether your school has submitted a School Travel Plan. If not, tell your teacher you need one
  10. Ask the School Council to discuss cycling and walking to school at their next meeting
