Whatever you decide to do to boost cycling and walking in your child's school please discuss it with the school before going ahead.

As a parent you have an important role to play in enabling your child or children to get the essential physical exercise they need to remain healthy. For some parents it is of course very difficult to get your child to school other than by car, for others it is simply a matter of giving your child the freedom to travel under their own steam. We've developed some simple guidelines to help, but for more information simply register as a Champion and we'll send you a more detailed Action Plan.

Top Tips for parents

  1. Talk to other parents about their views on walking and cycling to find out if there are any practical issues that need to be addressed, such as cycle parking and safe routes
  2. Find out if your child's school has a School Travel Plan, if not ask them to develop one. If it already has one, find out if there are any actions you can help implement
  3. If your child's school does not have cycle parking producing a School Travel Plan can help you access funding for this
  4. Organise your child and other children who live nearby into 'walking buses' or cycle groups to travel to school
  5. Talk to the teachers to arrange a 'car-free' day at your child's school where parents are encouraged to get their children walking or cycling to school
  6. Share information with other teachers and parents and pupils by asking the school if you can display information in school and PTA newsletters and on staff and pupil notice boards
  7. Liaise with the local authority's road safety team to see where speed reduction measures or safer pedestrian crossings can be introduced around your school
  8. Talk to teachers about organising cycle training and road safety days at your child's school
  9. Talk to other schools too - by sharing ideas and experiences you can save time and effort while together you also have greater 'power' to influence local councilors, road safety officers etc
  10. Contact your local authority and find out what support they can offer you and the school
